Generation No. 1
1. JAMES1 STANDIFER
was born January 06, 1797 in Lee County, Virginia, and died September 27, 1880
in Sneedville, Hancock County, Tennessee. He married SARAH BLEVINS,
daughter of SALLY BLEVINS. She was born April 11, 1803 in Tennessee, and died
April 11, 1893 in Sneedville, Hancock County, Tennessee.
Notes for JAMES STANDIFER:
Click here for James' and Sallie's tombstone photo.
James Standifer was born 6 January 1797 [tombstone Bryant/Rasnic Cemetery
District 8 Hancock Co., TN] in Virginia [Sistler's 1850 Ha-404-109].
If he was born in Lee County, Virginia, the Standifer men living there at the
time of his birth include Archibald, Job, Isaac and Isaiah. In 1820 he would
have been 23 years of age. If James was living in a Lee County, VA Standifer
household in 1820, the only two households with a man of that age were those of
William and James, who was listed as a Stanfield.
James married to Sarah Blevins probably about the year 1822 [Surname
provided by descendant Art Sarratt & already suspected because of presence
of her mother in the 1860 census of Hancock Co., TN]. Sarah, sometimes known
as "Sallie" was born 11 April 1803 [tombstone] in Tennessee [Ibid.].
She is believed to be the daughter of Sally Blevins who was born in Virginia in
1775 and who lived with them in 1860 [Hancock County, TN Mulberry Gap
District p. 505]. [NOTE: in 1820 there were two men named Blevins living
in Lee County - James on p. 126A and James Sr. on p. 127. There were no Blevins
in 1830 Lee County, but one James Blevins was listed in adjacent Scott Co., VA
p. 005].
James Standifer did not appear on the tax lists of Lee County through the
year 1814 which is logical since he would not have been old enough in 1814 to be
listed. The lists are missing from 1815 through 1826. In 1827 James Standifer
was listed on the tax list in Lee County, but did not pay a poll tax. Thus, this
entry may have been for the older James Standifer who was in the 1820 census. In
1828 James Standifer paid a poll tax and was listed next to William Standifer.
In 1830 a man named James Standifer was enumerated in the census of Lee
County, Virginia living near Joseph and William Standifer [p. 322].
James and his apparent wife were 20 to 30 years of age with three small
children. He would have been 33 based on the date on his tombstone and his wife
27.
In 1830 James paid a poll tax in Lee County and from 1831 to 1833 James was
taxed on both a white and a black poll. In 1833 James was received in the
Baptist Church of Christ at Thompson Settlement [Records of Thompson
Settlement Church, Jonesville, Virginia by the Virginia DAR, 1982, p. 3]. In
1834 James was taxed on one white poll and two slaves. James continued to be
taxed through the year 1840, but was not found after that year. In only one
year, 1839, were there two men named James that were taxed. This may have been a
duplicate list as there was never two men by the name of James listed on the
same tax list.
In 1840 it was surely the same James Standifer who was enumerated in the
census of Lee County [p. 110]. He was listed as 40 to 50 years of age and
his wife was listed as 30 to 40 years of age, both accurate based on the
tombstone dates. Living with James and Sarah were five children. This was the
last year that James paid a poll tax in Lee County, Virginia. He apparently
migrated to Tennessee shortly after the census for a daughter was reportedly
born there in 1842. However, on 7 July 1847 he purchased 100 acres of land on
Little Paint Creek in Floyd County, Kentucky from Joseph Boyd [Floyd Co., KY
DB E:574]. Witnesses were John P. Martin and James Harris. The deed does not
state where he was living at the time of this purchase.
In 1850 James and Sally were listed in the Hancock County census in Mulberry
District [Sistler Ha-404-109]. James was listed as 48 and Sarah as 41.
James would have been 53 and Sarah 47. At this time were nine children living
with them. Living nearby was Joseph Standifer, wife Nancy and family [Sistler
Ha-396-108]. Isaiah lived nearby [Sistler Ha-387-107] and a few
houses away were Foster and Martha Jones, their son William's in-laws [family
#417].
In December of 1851 James Standefer was of Hancock County, Tennessee when he
appointed his son William of Floyd County, Kentucky his attorney to sell 150
acres of land on Little Paint Creek [Floyd Co., KY DB D:76]. On 6 January
1852, power of attorney was sworn to by James Standifer in court in Hancock
County, Tennessee. The land was sold under this power of attorney on 5 March
1852 to Robert M. George Jr. [Floyd Co., KY DB D:78]. Although identified
as 100 acres in the deed of purchase and 150 acres in the deed of sale, the
legal description matches in both deeds and the land is identified in the deed
of sale as being the land James Standefer purchased of Joseph Boyd.
In 1860 James and Sally were enumerated in Hancock County living in Mulberry
Gap District [p. 505]. James was listed as 58 and his wife Sally was
listed as 53. Based on the tombstone date, he should have been 63 and she would
have been 57. Their four youngest children lived with them as did Sally Blevins
age 85, presumably Sally's mother, who was born in Virginia, possibly his
mother-in-law. The nearest Standifer family was that of William and Elisabeth
Standifer who lived just nine households from them. In the other direction some
thirteen households away lived William and Mary Ann Standifer. This particular
William Standifer was 26 years of age. He is believed to be the son of Joseph
and Nancy Standifer who, in 1850 had a son William aged 18 in their household.
Based on the birthplaces of the children of their son Andrew, the Standifers
probably left Tennessee after the Civil War and moved to Lee County, Virginia
around 1868.
By 1870 James and Sally were enumerated in the census of Lee County,
Tennessee living in White Shoals [p. 389]. James was listed as 69, born
in Kentucky, and he owned real estate valued at $600 and personal property worth
$200. Sarah was listed as 65 and also born in Kentucky. Living with them was
their daughter Lydia age 21, born in Hancock County, Tennessee. Their son Andrew
lived next door and their son Isaiah lived nearby [p. 384].
In 1880 James and Sarah Stanford were enumerated in the census of Hancock
County living in Civil District 9 [#60-60]. James was listed as 81 and
born in Kentucky of parents born in Kentucky. Sarah was 76 and born in Tennessee
of parents born in Tennessee. Based on the cemetery dates, he would have been 83
and she would have been 77, making their ages relatively accurate based on their
tombstone dates. Although listed as Stanfords, there is no doubt that
they are in fact James and Sally Standifer. Living with them was their daughter
Lydia listed as Lyda, age 29 (she would have been 32 based on earlier census
records). John Stanford age 20 also lived with them, perhaps a grandson. Their
daughter Juda, still single, lived nearby [#50-50].
They are both buried in the Bryant/Rasnic Cemetery, located on Route 4,
Mulberry Road, Sneedville, Hancock County, Tennessee. There were no other
Standifers with tombstones in the cemetery. James died September 27, 1880, after
the 1880 census was taken. Sally died 11 April 1893.

Notes for JOHN H. STANDIFER:
John H. Standifer was born about
1827, the son of James and Sally Standifer. In 1830 and 1840 he was enumerated
in the household of his parents in Lee County, Virginia. In 1850 he was
enumerated in the household of his parents in Hancock County, Tennessee. In 1860
he was the head of a household in Hancock County, Tennessee living near his
father James and his brothers Stephen and Zachariah [Ha-153-530]. He
was 32 years of age and was listing with an apparent wife, Agness Stanifer, age
43 and William Fisher age 18, a stepson.
In 1870 he was 43 years of age
and the head of the household in Civil District 8 of Hancock County, Tennessee [Sistler
Ha-56]. Agness was listed as 55. Mary Smith age 20 lived with them.
In 1880, J. H. and Agnes
Standifer were living alone in Civil District 8 of Hancock County [#86-87].
John said he was 52 years of age and born in Virginia of a father born in
Virginia and a mother born in Tennessee.
John and Agness were still
living in Hancock County in Civil District 8 when the census was taken in 1900 [#92-96].
John gave his age as 72 and his birth date as November 1827. Agnes gave her age
as 84 and her birth date as January 1816. They had been married 40 years but had
no children.
When John and Angess died is
unknown, but they were not found in later census records. Since vital records
were kept in Hancock County beginning in 1914 and no death records were found
for them, it is assumed that they died in Hancock County by 1914. They had no
issue.

Notes for STEVEN STANDIFER:
Steven Standifer was born about
1840 in Tennessee, the son of James and Sally Standifer. In 1850 he was
enumerated in the census with his parents in Hancock County, Tennessee. In 1860
Steven was aged 19 and the head of a household in Hancock County that consisted
of himself and his apparent wife Margaret age 19 [Sistler Ha-155-531].
In 1870 Stephen was listed as
the head of the household in Hancock County [Sistler Ha-61]. He was 26
years of age and Margaret was listed as 26 also, both were born in Tennessee.
Although they had been married at least ten years, they had no children. In 1880
there was a Stephen aged 39 living in Claiborne County [Sistler Cl-147].
Stephen and Margaret's names were spelled Stanaford and Eastis on their marriage license.
Notes for MARGARET M. EASTUS: On the 1850 Claiborne Co., TN census, Margaret is listed as living with the family of Elisha and Mariah Eastus. She was age 10.
Margaret is buried in the Irish Cemetery at Tazewell Co., TN. Her tombstone has the following inscription: "MARGARET STANDIFER, BORN MARCH 12, 1840, DIED MARCH 29, 1905. Generation No. 2
2. WILLIAM2 STANDIFER
(JAMES1) was born August 1824 in Lee Co. Virginia. He
married ELIZABETH JONES March 05, 1847 in Claiborne County,
Tennessee, daughter of FOSTER JONES and MARTHA MCVEY. She was born 1831 in
Hancock County, Tennessee.
Notes for WILLIAM STANDIFER:
William Standifer was born about 1824 in Lee County, Virginia [1870 census
Lee Co., VA p. 389], the son of James and Sarah (Blevins) Standifer [Floyd
Co., KY DB E:574 and DB D:76-8]. William's wife was Elizabeth Jones,
the daughter of Foster and Martha Jones, who was born about 1831.
One William Standifer Jr., who may or may not be the one of interest, first
appeared on the Lee County, Virginia tax lists in 1844 and was last taxed in
1847. It is likely that he followed the traditional pattern of migration for the
Standifer family, leaving Virginia in the mid to late 1840's and going to
Hancock County, Tennessee.
In adjacent Claiborne County, Tennessee William Standifer married to
Elizabeth Jones on 5 March 1847 [Sistler's Early E TN Marriages, p. 346].
This marriage date is consistent with the birth of their first child on 27 July
1848. It is also consistent with the fact that Foster and Martha Jones were
enumerated in the 1840 census of Claiborne County, Tennessee [p. 235]. By
1850 Foster and Martha were enumerated in Hancock County, Tennessee living just
a few households from William's parents in Mulberry Gap [#417/417].
Why William and Elizabeth went to Kentucky isn't known. They were enumerated
in the 1850 census of Floyd County, Kentucky [p. 461]. William was
listed as 26, a farmer with real estate valued at $200, born in Tennessee.
Elizabeth was listed as 19 and born in Kentucky [probably not accurate as her
place of birth]. Two children were living with them and Floyd Standifer, age 20,
and an apparent sister who was married to Christopher Patton. Floyd County is an
eastern Kentucky county currently located north and slightly east of Lee County,
Virginia, which is just across the state line from Hancock County, Tennessee.
In 1850 William was the only Standifer on the Floyd County tax lists and he
paid a poll. In 1851 and 1852 William was taxed on 150 acres of land in Floyd
County valued at $150. John Standifer also paid a poll tax in Floyd County those
two years. From 1853 through 1857 Floyd and occasionally Preston Standifer paid
a poll tax in Floyd County.
By 1860 William Standifer had moved to Hancock County, Tennessee where he was
enumerated in the census living in Mulberry Gap District [p. 506 #993/946].
William was 35 years of age, a farmer with real estate valued at $50, and born
in Virginia. Elizabeth was listed as 29 and born in Tennessee. Five children
lived with them. Also living in Mulberry Gap District was James Standifer, a man
aged 58, and his wife Sally. Another William, age 26, and his large family lived
nearby.
By 1870, William and Elizabeth had removed to Lee County, Virginia where they
were enumerated in the census living in White Shoals with Jonesville as a post
office [p. 389 #1171/1172]. William was listed as 45, working on a farm,
with personal property valued at $200. His birthplace was listed as Lee County,
Virginia. Elizabeth was listed as 38 with a birthplace of Hancock County,
Tennessee. Nine children lived with them. The census taker included the county
of birth in addition to the state. Also living with them were Elizabeth's
parents: Foster Jones, age 74, born in Hancock County, Tennessee and Martha
Jones, age 74, born in Hawkins County, Tennessee and Lydia Jones, age 27, born
in Claiborne County, Tennessee.
In the mid 1870's William J. and Rebecca Standifer bought and sold a number
of tracts of land in Lee County, Virginia [DB 17:316, 323, 418, 459, 509, 582].
It is not known whether or not these deeds were for the same William Standifer
with a new wife.
William and Elizabeth have not been located in the 1880 census.
CIVIL WAR:
William Standifer enlisted in the Confederate Army on July 10, 1861 at
Cumberland Gap, Kentucky, by Lt. Col. Walker for 12 months. He was a Pvt. in Co.
C 4th (Branner's) Battalion Tennessee Cavalry. This company subsequently became
Company D, 2nd (Ashby's) Regiment Tennessee Cavalry. This battalion was formed
August 29, 1861, with six companies of twelve months men, which had been
organized in June or July 1861, for the Provisional Army of Tennessee and
afterward transferred to the Confederate States service. The battalion was
re-organized May 24, 1862 and then consolidated with the 5th Battalion Tennessee
Cavalry to form the 2nd (Ashby's) Regiment Tennessee Cavalry. It was also called
the 1st and 2nd Battalion Tennessee Cavalry.
On July 24, 1862, William was in the brig for stealing a pistol. He spent 6
months in the brig. On February 6, 1863 he was transferred to Co. C 29th
Regiment Tennessee Infantry. He was disabled from wounds suffered at the Battle
of Chickamauga; his leg was amputated and he was furloughed to Dalton, Georgia.
On Jan 15, 1864 he appears on a Roll of Prisoners of War and paroled at
Cumberland Gap, KY, by Col. William Y. Dillard, 34th KY. Inf. Vols on April 25,
1865.
Upon parole, William returned to Hancock County, Tennessee.

Notes for ISAIAH STANDIFER:
Isaiah Standifer was born about 1835 in Lee County, Virginia, the son of
James and Sally Standifer. In 1840 in Lee County, Virginia and 1850 in Hancock
County, Tennessee he was enumerated in the household of his parents. Isaiah,
along with his brother Zachariah, was not listed in the 1860 census of Hancock
County.
Isaiah must have married about 1855 to Mary Ann Jones, the daughter of Foster
and Martha Jones, who was born in 1836 in Hancock County, Tennessee. In 1870
they were enumerated in the census of Lee County, Virginia living in White
Shoals Township [p. 384]. Isaiah was listed as 35 years of age and born
in Lee County, Virginia and Mary was listed as 34 and born in Hancock County,
Tennessee. Four children lived with them.
In 1880 Isaiah and Mary Ann were enumerated in the census of Collin County,
Texas. They both died there and are buried in Roual Bethlehem Church,
Farmersville, Collin County, Texas.
