JOHNSON, d 22 Mar 18_2  13 days   ( Infant son of S.D. & R.J. JOHNSON)

JOHNSON, ____?____  (top part of stone missing) d 15 Jul 1867  1y 7m 3d

(SH:  This child’s grave is by the John Kent Johnson family.)

JOHNSON, Adeline  1845-1934

(w/o James A. JOHNSON)   (Adeline died at home of dau. Mrs. Margaret HEDGER, at Benton, IL  10 Sep 1934  per obit - listed as Evaline. jm)   (SH:  Minerva “Adeline” Carney Johnson, d/o Andrew Jackson (“Jack”) Carney and Plina Clark Carney.   Minerva “Adeline” Carney Johnson’s tombstone gives her year of birth as 1845; Her death certificate, information given by her daughter, Margaret Johnson Glass Hedger, gives her year of birth as May 12, 1846.  Adeline’s obituary gives her date of birth as May 12, 1847.  In 1928 when Adeline applied for a Widow’s Pension, she states her date of birth as May 12, 1846, which  would appear to be her correct birth date.  Adeline died on September 10, 1934.  The correct spelling of her surname is also open to interpretation.  Family records all spell the surname as “Carney”; yet her.  Obituary gives the spelling as “Kearney”.  Her brother, George W. (Washington) who is buried at this cemetery uses the spelling of “Carney”.  The brother, Jesse, who is buried at Flint Cemetery in Belle Rive uses the spelling of “Kearney”.  Several children of Jesse who are buried here also use the “Kearney” spelling.

The family of “Jackson” (Andrew Jackson) Carney and wife, P. (Plina) A. (Adeline??) Carney are enumerated in the Franklin County 1850 Census:  George W., age 5; M. (Minerva) A. (Adeline) age 4 and Catharine, age 1.  The mother, Plina Clark Carney died shortly after the birth of her last child, Jesse, born in 1851.  After the mother’s death, the children were raised by relatives and neighbors.  In the 1860 Census, Minerva (Adeline) age 13 and brother Jesse age 9 are living with their uncle (George) Washington Carney.  The sister, Catharine, has died.  After living with her Uncle, Adeline was raised by “Aunt Rhoda” Carlton.   On March 31, 1864, in the home of “Aunt Rhoda” Carlton, Minerva “Adeline” Carney married civil war soldier, James A. Johnson.  The minister was Hosea Vise (who is buried at Antioch Cemetery).

Eleven children were born to Adeline and James Johnson.  The names and dates of birth are taken from the claim for Civil War pension filed by James A. Johnson in 1915:

(1)     unnamed boy, born 1865 died 3 days after birth; (2) Plina, born 9-17-1866. Plina Johnson w/o John Vaughn is buried at this Cemetery; (3) Elizabeth born 12-25-1868.  This is Nancy Elizabeth “Lizzy” w/o of Alonzo “Lon” Glass.  They are buried  at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon;  (4) Sugorha Jan born 1871 and lived 3 months; (5) Margaret born 10-18-1873.  This is Margaret Adeline w/o of John Glass and after his death she remarried to a man named Hedger.  Margaret and her 1st husband, John Glass, are buried at nearby Antioch Cemetery; (6) unnamed boy born 1-8-1874 who lived only 5 minutes; (7) Nora F. born 11-11-1877.  Nora married Oscar Williams.  They are buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.  (8) Della born 4-11-1879.  Della married Paul Broyles, a long time state senator.  They are buried at Memorial Gardens in Mt. Vernon.  (9) Ella born 8-22-1883.  Ella married Wayne Osborne.  Ella died 2-18-1931 in Gary, IN.   (10) James Christopher born 5-6-1884.  “Chris” married Daisy Smith.  They are buried at Union Chapel Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.  (1)  Cora Bell Johnson born 11-22-1888.  Cora married George Noon Hall.  They are also buried at Union Chapel Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.   See listing of James A. Johnson for more information about this family.)

JOHNSON, Albert   20 Jan 1864   19y 1m 26d

A recruit in 49th Ill  D at Camp Butler ;They served their country   (SH:  This is Albert N. Johnson, born 1846
died 1-20-1864.  Albert died at Camp Butler in Springfield, IL during the Civil War.
  Rev. Dupree’s book “Early
Johnsons of Hamilton County” gives his regiment as IL 13 Infantry.  Albert was the son of
Robert Henry and
Catherine Smith Johnson.  Also buried here is Albert’s brother, Robert J., who also died during the Civil War.
See listing for Robert J. JOHNSON.  See the listing for Robert Henry Johnson for more information on this
                family.
Per Judy Couey, Franklin County researcher, the date of death is 1-20-1862.  She also has Albert serving
with 13th IL Cavalry.  Rather than 49th IL.  It is possible he served in both.  However, I believe the 13th IL
Cavalry was not mustered until 1864, so
given Albert’s death, whether in 1862 or  1864, it is more probable he
was in the IL 49th.  It is also possible this is another Albert Johnson.)

(SH:  Enoch Sanford Johnson was the son of Robert Henry and Catherine Smith Johnson.  Enoch was a Trustee
                for the Macedonia
Methodist Church when the land was purchased on September 13, 1866.  For more
information on this Johnson family, see the listing
for Robert Henry Johnson.  Elizabeth Jane Johnson was the
daughter of Christopher Cooper and Kathryn Kerbaugh Johnson.
Christopher was the son of Zopher and
Phebe Cooper Johnson.  Enoch and Elizabeth Jane were married in Hamilton County
on 8-18-1857.  Family
sources state this couple are both buried here in unmarked graves.  Family sources state this couple
had nine
children, but only 2 lived to adulthood.  One of these children was Frances “Fannie” Louisa Johnson who
                married Cornelius
Neal Burton Carlton.  Both “Fanny” and Cornelius CARLTON are buried here.  After
Elizabeth’s death, Enoch remarried to Mary Ellen Edgington.  She is buried in West Salem, Mt Vernon, IL.

JOHNSON, James A.  1843-1927 (SH:  b. 1-7-1843; d. 10-21-1927) (h/o Adeline JOHNSON)

(SH:  James A. Johnson was born in Greene County, TN on 1-7-1843 (date of birth is taken from the information
                he gave
when applying for a Civil War pension in 1915.  He came to Hamilton County, IL in late 1853/1854 with
                his grandparents, Zopher
and Phebe Cooper Johnson;  his parents Christopher Cooper Johnson and Kathryn
Kerbaugh Johnson, and his siblings, Elizabeth
Jane,  Zopher Alexander, and Phebe Adeline.  (Christopher’s
land was purchased in December 1853.)  Other family members who also came to Hamilton County were James’
Uncle, (Dr.) John Henderson Johnson and his young wife,
Sarah Graham, and his Aunt, Elizabeth Jane Johnson
Johnson, wife of Hiram Johnson.  Two more siblings would be born after
the family’s arrival in Hamilton
County.  A sister, Sarah Ann was born in 1858 and a brother, Ellsworth was born about 1860.

James A. Johnson was a Civil war soldier enlisting with IL 40th Co A., on August 12, 1861.  James A. Johnson
                served with IL 40th
until his discharge in Atlanta in 1864.  He then enlisted with IL 49th Co. G on March 13,
1865.  He was mustered out on
September 9, 1865. James saw active combat and was injured at Shiloh and
Mission Ridge.  At Shiloh, he was “left for dead” on
the battlefield.  At Mission Ridge, he was seriously
wounded which resulted in a lifetime injury.  James A’s father, Christopher Cooper Johnson, also served with IL
40th Co. A, enlisting on August 16, 1861.  Christopher Cooper Johnson, his wife, Kathryn, and their infant son,
Ellsworth, all died of disease at Memphis, TN in the Fall of 1862.  They are presumably buried at Memphis.

James A. Johnson returned home on leave and married Minerva “Adeline” Carney Johnson on March 31, 1864.  They had 11 children, eight of whom survived to adulthood.   (Refer to the listing for Adeline Johnson for the list of children.)  James A. Johnson, his wife Adeline Carney Johnson, and their oldest child, Plina “Lina” Johnson VAUGHN are buried in the Johnson plot, directly behind the Church at this cemetery.  Also buried at this cemetery are James A.’s brother, Zopher Alexander Johnson and several of his family members; James A.’s sister, Elizabeth Jane Johnson Johnson; his Uncle, Dr. John Henderson Johnson, and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

James A. Johnson was a farmer and blacksmith in Hamilton County,  He purchased the bell for the Church
which is still there to this  day.  In 1900,  James A. Johnson sold his land in Hamilton County and moved to Mt.
Vernon, Jefferson County, IL where he died at his home on Old Salem Road on October 21, 1927.  The James A.
Johnson family plot is directly behind the Church.  Sadly, his grave marker gives no indication of his Civil War
                service.)

JOHNSON, James M.  13 May 1837-11 Nov 1874  37y 5m 28d

                FLT emblem

JOHNSON, Jane d 23 Sep 1862   44y 10m 27d

                (w/o Hiram G. JOHNSON)

(SH:  (Elizabeth) Jane Johnson Johnson (born 1818) was the daughter of Zopher Johnson Jr. and his wife, Phebe
                Cooper Johnson.
She was sister of James A. Johnson and Zopher A. Johnson, both of whom are buried in this
                cemetery.  Jane married
Hiram Johnson (born 1816) in Greene County, IL on  9-4-1837.  Hiram was the son of
William and Nancy Morgan Johnson, and the brother of Robert Henry Johnson (see below for more about this
family.)  After Jane’s death, Hiram remarried to Paralee War Proctor.  Paralee was first married to Harris Proctor.
There is conflicting information on where Hiram is buried.  Some sources say he is buried in an unmarked grave
at Macedonia Cemetery.   Other sources say Hiram is buried at Hebron Cemetery with his second wife, Paralee,
and their son, Anderson (born 1869).   Indeed, there is a tombstone at Hebron Cemetery for an H. G. Johnson
                and his
2nd family:  wife, “Jerusha” (??) Johnson (1833-1891), their son,  Anderson Johnson (1868-1889); and
two of their daughters Lillie Johnson Dudley (1864-1902) and Emma C. Johnson Woolridge (b. 1867), possibly
wife of David Woolridge (1869-1938). There are no dates on the tombstone for H. G. Johnson at Hebron.  Hiram
died sometime after the 1870 census and before the 1880 census.)

JOHNSON, Dr. John H(enderson)  (30 Nov) 1829-(20 Jun) 1919  (per obit  jm)

(Dr. John Henderson JOHNSON b. Green Co, TN; d. at his home near Macedonia, IL per his obit; md 3 Oct 1850 to Sarah J. GRIMES - 6 children; Sarah d. 20 Jul 1869; md Telitha C. SEZTON (sic) 26 Dec 1869 -  (7 children) -  early life spent in TN, then to MO., then to IL; Methodist minister -  s/o Zopher JOHNSON Jr. & Phoebe (COOPER) Johnson;  (Phoebe’s maiden name per Virginia CUNNINGHAM)

(SH:  The first wife of Dr. John Henderson Johnson was Sarah GRAHAM not Sarah Grimes.  They were married
                in Greene County,
TN on 10-30-1850. In late 1853/1854, they left Greene County, TN and came to Hamilton
County, IL with several family members.  Among those who settled in Hamilton or Franklin Counties, were Dr.
John’s parents, Zopher and Phebe Cooper Johnson; his brother,
Christopher Cooper Johnson and his wife,
Kathryn Kerbaugh, and their children; and his sister, Elizabeth “Jane” who had married
Hiram Johnson, and
their family.  Dr. John’s brother, Christopher,  died in 1862 during the Civil War and is buried at Memphis, TN.
Dr. John’s sister, Jane, is buried here.  Numerous nieces and nephews are also buried here.

Dr. John had 6 children by his first wife, Sarah GRAHAM.  Sarah died on 7-30-1869.   On 12-26-1869, Dr. John Henderson Johnson remarried to Talitha Sexton,  and they had 7 children.  The children with 1st wife, Sarah Graham are::

    (1)  Zopher b. 9-1-1851 d. 3-27-1932.  Zopher is buried at this cemetery;

    (2) Christopher Columbus b. 9-10-1856 d. 6-17-1917;

    (3) William, b. 11-7-1852 d. 11-4-1858.  William is probably buried here since he died in childhood but there is no indication of a grave marker.

   (4) Nancy Ann b. 5-8-1859 d. 10-8-1897;

   (5) John Logan, b. 11-17-1861 d. 12-6-1862.  Again, John Logan who died as an infant must be buried here, but there is no grave marker;

   (6) Lizzie Jane b. 8-9-1865 (in MO) d. 10-4-1943. Lizzie married George A. Bradford and they are buried here.

The children with 2nd wife Talitha Sexton are:

    (7) Minnie Louise, b. 10-22-1870 d. 7-23-1962.  Minnie married John Sims.  They are buried at Antioch
                        Cemetery.

    (8) Winnie May b. 2-8-1872 d. 12-24-1950.  Winnie married James Moore and they are buried here.

    (9) Mary Etta b. 4-4-1874 d. 1-15-1968.  Mara Etta married Harrison Hutchcraft and they are buried here;

  (10) Clara Ester b. 5-2-1877 d. 11-19-1967.  Clara Ester married John C. Hankins and they are buried here;

  (11) John Huggard b. 2-26-1880 d. 11-30-1922.  John Huggard is buried here.

  (12) Ella Ethel b. 4-7-1884 d. 2-2-1962.  Ella Ethel married Omer L. Hays and they are buried here.

  (13) Ada Lenora b. 4-5-1882 d. 2-1-1915.  Ada Lenora married Joseph G. Williams and they are buried here.)

Dr. John Henderson Johnson and his 2nd wife, Talitha Sexton are both buried at this cemetery.  It would seem
probable that Dr. John’s 1st wife, Sarah Graham Johnson, who died in 1869, would also be buried here; yet, there
is no indication of a grave marker.
It is most probable that Sarah is buried by her two young sons John Logan
who died in 1862 and William who died in 1858, all in unmarked graves.
Dr. John Henderson Johnson was a
physician, minister, and served on the Board of Trustees for the Village of Macedonia in 1896.)

UNMARKED GRAVE:   JOHNSON, John Huggard (or Haggard??)

(SH:  John Huggard (or Haggard??)  Johnson was born 2-26-1880 and died 11-30-1922.  Per his obit, he was
buried on December 1, 1922, and was 42 years 9 months and 4 days.  John was the son of Dr. John Henderson
Johnson and his 2nd wife, Talitha Sexton, both of whom are buried at this cemetery.  Dr. John Henderson
Johnson was the son of Zopher and Phebe
Cooper Johnson.  John Huggard Johnson’s  first wife was Gussie
Barnett; his 2nd wife was Althea Sink; his 3rd wife was
Ethel Jackson.  There is no indication that any of his
                wives are buried here.)

JOHNSON, John K.  28 Nov 1813-2 Sep 1892   78y 9m 3d

                (h/o Nancy (ELLISON?) JOHNSON)

(SH:  There are three Johnson families who are all from Greene County, TN and are near the same age.  In
                addition to John K. (Kent)
there is Robert Henry (see below) and  Zopher Johnson, born 1790, and his sons
Christopher, born 1821/22 and John Henderson born 1829.  All three of these families lived in close proximity to
each other.  The Zopher Johnson family and the Robert Henry
family intermarried several times.  There is no
known blood relationship among these three families that has thus far been
confirmed.  However, the close
proximity of these families and their Tennessee roots makes for much confusion and speculation.)

SH:  UNMARKED GRAVE:  JOHNSON, Robert Henry and his wife, Catherine Smith JOHNSON

(SH:  Because of the prominence of this family in Macedonia, IL, a short synopsis is presented.  There are no
                gravestones for
Robert Henry Johnson and his wife, Catherine Smith Johnson.  They are purported to be buried
                here based on information in
Rev. Dupree’s book, “Early Johnsons of Hamilton County.”  Although it would
very much seem unlikely that this prominent
couple would be buried in unmarked graves, Rev. Dupree did
utilize every source of printed information from Hamilton
and Franklin Counties, as well as interviews with
descendants, to compile his intensive history of the Johnson families.  Giving
credence that Robert Henry and
Catherine are indeed buried here is the fact that two of their sons, Robert J. (1843-1862) and
Albert N.
(1846-1864) who both died during civil war service, are buried here and have tombstones.

Robert Henry Johnson, born 1812; died 2-19-1885.   Robert Henry  was the son of William and Nancy Morgan
Johnson of Greene Co., TN.  Robert Henry came to Hamilton County during the mid-1840’s.  He was a farmer,
merchant, and Postmaster (1861-1864).  The town
of Macedonia was created on 1-29-1858 from his land.  He was
a prominent figure in the formation of  13th IL Cavalry.  Robert
Henry’s brother, Hiram, also came to Hamilton
County.  Hiram had married Elizabeth “Jane”, daughter of Zopher and Phebe
Cooper Johnson, on 9-4-1837 in
Greene County, TN.  All of these Johnson families lived in very close proximity to each other
in Hamilton
                County.

Robert Henry and Catherine Smith Johnson had the following children:

(1)     Enoch, born 1836.  Enoch married the daughter, Elizabeth Jane, of Christopher Cooper and Kathryn Kerbaugh Johnson.  Enoch

and Elizabeth Jane are buried here in unmarked graves.  (2) Mary Ann, born 1837.  Mary Ann married Wm. VanCleave on 2-21-1856.  Mary Ann’s husband died on 10-14-1862.  Mary Ann’s father, Robert Henry, was appointed as guardian for the “orphaned” children in 1865.  On 2-18-1867, Mary Ann remarried to William B. Bolen.  There is a William B. Bolen (1846-1925) buried here with his wife, Cornelia.  I do not know if this is the same William B. Bolen who married Mary Ann.  There is no indication of a grave marker for Mary Ann Johnson VanCleave Bolen; however, her husband William VanCleave  does have a marker here (died 10-14-1862), as does her husband (?) William B. Bolen (died 5-5-1925).  One of Mary Ann’s children, Laura L. who died 10-20-1862, is also buried here with a marker.  Thus it would seem very likely that Mary Ann Johnson VanCleave Bolen is indeed buried here in an unmarked grave. (3) Samuel, born 1839.  Samuel married Rebecca Jane Fisher on 9-30-1859 in Franklin County.  He appears in the 1860 Census, but by the 1870 Census, he is no longer in the area.  Samuel is named in his father’s obituary.  The obituary says Robert Henry died in Samuel’s home, “2 miles south of Mt. Vernon.” (4) Martha A. born 1841.  Martha married Wilson Thompson.  She is also listed in her father, Robert Henry’s,  1885 obituary. (5) Robert J., born 1843.  Robert was with IL 40th Co. A.  He died after the battle of Shiloh, on 7-1-1862, at Mason, TN.  He and his brother, Albert N., are buried here with a marker, “they served their country.” (6) Albert N., born 1846.  Albert died at Camp Butler (Springfield, IL) on 1-20-1864 while serving with IL 13th Infantry.  Note that his father, Robert Henry, was a principal founder of this civil war regiment.  Albert is buried here beside his brother, Robert J.  (7) Harriet E., born 11-13-1847.  Harriet died on 9-13-1858 and is buried here. (8) Falvius J. born 1849.  Rev. Dupree in his book “Early Johnsons of Hamilton County” states that Flavius was married to Frances Boidin on 3-2-1867.  After their divorce, he married Lizzie Beardon; then was married a 3rd time to Elizabeth J. Hunter on 2-5-1870 in Franklin County, IL.  Neither Flavius nor any of his wives appear to buried here, yet we do know that he was still in Franklin County as late as 1870.  (9) Isabelle, born 1851.     Isabelle married B. J. W. Barnett on 10-10-1872.  Neither appear to be buried here.

Only two children, Martha A. Johnson Thompson and Samuel Johnson,  were named in Robert Henry’s obituary in 1885.  From this, I would infer that 7 of Robert Henry’s 9 children, as well as his wife, Catherine Smith Johnson, had predeceased him. Although there is no “official” record that Robert Henry and Catherine Smith Johnson are buried here, I present this short history of their family as a remembrance of this early pioneer family who contributed so much to the town of Macedonia.

JOHNSON, Robert J.  d. 7-1-1862 20 years 3 months

(SH:  Robert is buried by his brother, Albert N. (1846-1864) who died at Camp Butler during the Civil War.
                Robert died
at “Musco Tom” fighting with IL 40th Co. A.  Per Rev. Dupree’s book, “Early Johnsons of Hamilton
                County”, Robert
died following the battle of Shiloh at Mason, TN.  (The grave transcription of “Musco Tom” is
                probably a transcription
error due to the weathering of the inscription.)  Per Judy Couey, Franklin County
researcher, Robert J. Johnson’s date of death is 7-1-1862.  Brothers, Robert J. and Albert N. were sons of Robert
Henry and Catherine Smith Johnson.  For information about this family, see the above information on Robert
                Henry Johnson.)

                (d. **4 Sep 1887 per Tribute of Respect in Legacy of Kin Vol 1 pg 33 (1887-21  jm)  (SH:  Z. (Zopher) A. (Alexander) Johnson was the son of Zopher Johnson Jr. and his wife, Phebe Cooper Johnson.  Zopher A. was born in Greene County, TN and came to Hamilton County, IL with his parents Christopher Cooper Johnson and Kathryn Kerbaugh Johnson, and his siblings, Elizabeth Jane,  James A., and Phebe Adeline in late 1853 or early 1854 (father, Christopher’s land was purchased in December 1853.)  Other family members who also came to Hamilton County were Christopher’s parents, Zopher Johnson Jr and his wife, Phebe Cooper Johnson; Zopher Jr’s other son (Dr.) John Henderson Johnson and his young wife, Sarah Graham, and Zopher Jr’s daughter, Elizabeth Jane Johnson Johnson, wife of Hiram Johnson.  Zopher A. Johnson was a  Civil war soldier enlisting with the 13th IL Cavalry in 1864 and was mustered out on 8-31-1865.    Zopher A. married Sarah An Boster on  February 23, 1864.  They had 12 children, but only 4 survived:  Riley Alexander born 1874; Clarence Edgar born 1875; Albert L. born 1877 and Elme Elsworth born 1882.  All but Riley Alexander are buried at this cemetery.   Also buried at this cemetery are Zopher A.’s brother, James A.  Johnson and a sister, Elizabeth Jane Johnson Johnson.  Although there are no indications of grave markers, it would seem to be a certainty that Zopher A.’s 8 children who died in childhood would be buried in this cemetery.  His wife, Sarah Ann Boster is buried here in an unmarked grave.  Their descendants say a tree was planted as Sarah’s grave marker.  It would seem logical to conclude the mother and children would be buried together.  Rev. Z. (Zopher) A. (Alexander) Johnson is not to be confused with Zopher  (H.) Johnson, born 1851 died 1932, below.   Zopher A. was the son of Christopher Cooper Johnson.  Zopher (H.) Johnson was the son of Christopher’s  younger brother, Dr. John Henderson Johnson, also buried at this cemetery.)

JOHNSON, Zopher  1851-1932

(SH: Zopher (H.) Johnson, born 9-1-1851; died 3-27-1934.  Son of Dr. John Henderson Johnson and his first
wife,  Sarah Graham.  Zopher’s first wife was Mary Emma Boswell.  With Mary, Zopher had two daughters, Nora
and Myrtle.  Zopher’s 2nd wife was Julia A. Brooks.  With Julia, Zopher had one son who died as an infant.
Zopher’s 3rd wife was  Lydia Mary Benson Hargrove.  With Lydia, Zopher had 3 children:  Pernie Atlanta; Verla
                Mason and Leon Henderson.
All of these last three children and Zopher’s 3rd wife, Lydia Mary, are buried at
this cemetery.    Zopher (H.) Johnson is not to be confused with Rev. Z. (Zopher) A. (Alexander) Johnson,
                above.  Zopher A.
Johnson was the son of Christopher Cooper Johnson and his wife, Kathryn Kerbaugh
Johnson.  Christopher was the brother to Dr. John Henderson Johnson.  Both Dr. John and Christopher were
sons of Zopher Johnson Jr. and his wife, Phebe Cooper Johnson.)

“Carney”.  Villa’s  1899 obituary also spells the surname as Carney.  When her sister, Harriett,  died in 1927, her
name was spelled as Harriett Kearney (Parkhurst).  It would seem that sometime between 1899 and 1927, the
family surname was changed from the spelling of “Carney” to that orr “Kearney”.  Father, Jesse died on
