GASS,  George W.  1844-1931  (per obit  jm)

Co. F.  135 Ill. Inf. (SH:  enlisted 5-13-1864.)  (h/o Mary (SULLIVAN) GASS)

(SH:  George W. (Wilburn) Gass born 2-23-1844; died 3-20-1931.  George W. came to the Macedonia area as a
child in 1853/54 with the family of Zopher Johnson Jr and his wife Phebe Cooper Johnson .  The family came
from Greene County, TN.  In the Greene Co, TN 1850 census,  “George” (no surname), age 6,  is residing in the
Zopher Johnson Jr. household. By the 1860 census of Knights Prairie  Township, Hamilton County, IL, George
is now age 16 and is identified as “George Guess (phonetic spelling of “Gass”) and is still residing with Zopher
Jr and Phebe.  His relationship to this family is as yet undetermined.  In some documents, George stated his
mother’s surname as Johnson.  Yet, there has not been any marriage found in the Greene County, TN records
                between a Johnson
and a Gass/”Guess” to substantiate this.  In his Civil War pension papers, George Gass
described himself as “a poor orphan boy”.
George W. Gass had 2 sisters, Sal and Kate.  Sal is most probably
the “Sarah” , age 4, who lived with the Zopher Johnson Jr family
in the 1850 Greene County, TN Census.  It is
unknown if Sal/Sarah and Kate came to IL.)
