David Standiford was one of the founders of Shelbyville, KY. In 1792 he was appointed a "Gentleman Trustee" to lay off a town at the Shelby Co., Courthouse. He was appointed the first Sheriff of Shelby Co., the same day the county was created. He ordered purchasers of lots to build long houses with stone chimneys. About October 18, 1792, he asked the first Court of Shelby County for a jail - one "to confine prisoners in a manner that seems safest to him." David was a Senator from Kentucky from 1796 to 1800. He served two terms. He was the first Senator to represent the district containing only Shelby County. From: History of Shelby County, KY by George L. Willis, SR, ; pub. Notes for NANCY (ANN) STANDIFORD:
From the records kept by William Adams Gunn of Lexington, KY.
"Nancy Standiford Adams went upstairs to get the saddlebags from under the bed when a member of the family was going on a journey. It is supposed that she held the candle too close to the fringe of the coverlid so that it became ignited. Later the family found there was fire up there and Nancy Standiford Adams, wishing to save what she could, wrapped herself in a wet blanket and went into the room. The fire was extinguished by she was so badly burned that she died a couple of days later. It was thought that the steam from the wet blanket was the cause...that if the blanket had been dry her life might have been saved. This happed in Shelby County, KY in March 1827. Nancy Standiford Adams was the Grandmother of William Adams Gunn."

He married HANNAH CRESAP COLLIER November 05, 1818 in Shelby County, Kentucky, daughter of ISAAC COLLIER and ELIZABETH PARKER. She was born October 16, 1793 in MD, and died September 01, 1869 in Greencastle, Putnam Co., IN.
Notes for JOHN STANDIFORD:
John Standiford served as a soldier in the war of 1812-14 and was of the pioneers of Indiana, and as early as as 1827 started a merchandise business and built a woolen mill in Greencastle, IN. He became prominent in the state militia and was promoted to the rank of General.
From the notes of Grace Paris as submitted to her from Mrs. Florence Wells Bell in the 1930s:
"I am descended from Isaac Collier and his second wife Elizabeth Cresap Parker's (daughter of Colonel Thomas Cresap) oldest daughter of Hanna Cresap Parker. The Colliers and the Parkers lived in Cresaptown, MD and left there when the children were small. Isaac Collier went to Shelby Co., KY and the Parkers went to Galatin, TN. My grandmother, Hannah Cresap Collier married John Standiford, son of David Standiford and his wife, Francis Ashby, born near Martinsburg, VA. This grandmother often told me the story of her grandfather Col. Thomas Cresap. David Standiford and his wife came to Shelby Co., KY, then Gov. of VA. With his children, he moved when the Indians became hostile to the fort in Louisville, KY where a daughter, Susan, was born on the 1st day of the 1st week 1st day of the month, 1st day of the year, 1st day of the century: January 1, 1800. She married Joe Collier, my grandmother's brother who died in California. I knew them well. They and my mother's brother all went to California in the 1850s. My great grandfather believed in emancipation and freed his slaves. His will is on record in Shelby Co., KY, Shelbyville. He died about 1831.
My grandfather, Thomas Wells bought the Standiford farm, which was in his family for over 100 years. My grandfather, John Standiford and his wife Hannah Cresap Collier Standiford hated slavery so much that they moved to Greencastle, IN when the children were young. Two of the daughters of John and Hannah Standiford were sent back to Shelbyville to school. One was my mother Sarah Standiford who married William Wells, son of Thomas Wells. The daughter of Hannah Creasap Collier who married John Standiford left six children." (end of letter).
Miss Grace Paris notes: "Mrs. Bell lists the children and descendants of John and Hannah down to herself. However, Mr. Bernard Cresap says there are some errors. Mr. Cresap has collected data on the Cresap family and the Cresap society has published a book on the family".
Note: Elizabeth Cresap married first to Nathan Parker. (From The History of the Cresaps)
