The Standiford family was connected with agricultural development of Harford County and with its advance in other directions since the early days of settlement. Its members were identified with and prominent in the agricultural field.
The great grandfather of Dennis H. Standiford was the first Standiford in the United States. He was born in Wales and settled on a farm in Harford County. His son, Jacob, grandfather of Dennis H. was born in Baltimore County and farmed except for a period of military service in the Revolutionary War.
Dennis H. attended local schools to age twelve, began work then in the cotton factory at Warren, Baltimore County, for three years. He came to District 4, Harford County and apprenticed to blacksmith at age 17, served three years; continued as blacksmith for four more years. He gave up because of ill health and became a farmer and in late years transferred property to his adopted son.
Mr. Standiford married Susanna Engle (b. Delaware), daughter of John Engle (former from PA, of German descent) at age 31. No issue, but adopted son, William K. Standiford.
Mr. Standiford's church affiliation: Evangelical Church: "holds office as steward". He was a democrat.
Claudius Standiford, father of Dennis H., married Cordelia Hitchcock, born Harford Co., District 4. Issue nine children, only Dennis surviving. (1897)

H. Standiford: "The Standifords were first represented in America by the
great, great grandfather of Dennis H Standiford born in Wales. He in his youth
crossed the ocean and settled in Baltimore County, MD where he gave his attention to the
cultivation of a farm. His son, Jacob, (grandfather of Dennis H. of
this biography) was born in Baltimore County and always engaged in farming except in
period of service in the War of Revolution. Claudius Standiford, (father
of Dennis H. of this biography) was born in Baltimore County in 1812. Had nine
children, of whom Dennis H. is the only living."
