*This account was taken from genealogical papers titled "Standifer" donated to LDS library by the Southern Section U.S.D.A.C.
(Compiled by Elbert T. Schrader, Cleveland, TN)

The family lineage appears below.

Leroy Standifer was married to Mary Moore in 1834.  They lived in a home on Standifer Gap Road just across the road from Jenkins Road intersection place, later known as the Rogers place.  Mary Moore was a sister to three brothers: Peter, Rich and Doug Moore, all of Chattanooga. (TN)

Leroy and Mary later moved to homestead up Standifer Gap Road. This property was a cash purchase from the State of Tennessee, dated March 3, 1842.  This land formerly belonged to Cherokee Indians but the Indians were forcibly moved off the land in 1828 and moved by the Federal Government to the Indian territory (Oklahoma).   This farm has remained in the family since that day.  It is thought that the rock chimney is an original part of the home and possibly built by the Indians.

The first homestead consisted of a log kitchen, separate from the house, and located at the back of the house up a hill.  The cellar may have been an early building also.

There were six children born into home before this land was purchased.   Later, other children were born - a total of Sixteen.

This parcel of land had several springs of water located at the southeast corner.  The springs were a community source of water for years, even up to the early 1940s.  On visits to the homeplace, one could witness wagon after wagon hauling water out of barrels.  Near the largest spring was several large caves for years, large enough that Indians used them for hoes.  The caves consisted of several rooms one of which has since caved in and eventually entrances all impossible.

After settling the homestead, several years later the Civil War took its toil on this family.  The sixth children, a son Leroy, JR., was killed in Chattanooga, June 12, 1862.  He was the first person buried in the family cemetery.

Jeremiah J. died in 1881, after suffering long from the war.  It is believed his sister, Rachel, who married Jessie Poe and lived near the homestead took care of him.

After Leroy, Sr. died in 1891, his wife, Mary, remained on the homestead with her children caring for her.  She remained there for three years.

Sixteen and one half years before his mother Mary's death, Thomas R., the youngest son, had married Viola Alverta Boyd.  She was the daughter of Hugh Boyd and Sarah McKinney and had four brothers: Joe, Dan, Walter and John W, who married Thomas R. Standifer's sister, Elizabeth A.  There was a sister who died young.  Viola's mother met death mysteriously.  She was found dead in a path near her home at a considerably young age.  After her death, husband Hugh lived in Thomas R. and Viola's home much of the time.

Thomas R. and Viola had their own place across the road from the present Standifer Gap Baptist Church.  The place was known later as the Neal place.  All nine of their children were born there.

After Leroy and Mary's death in 1894, Thomas R. acquired the homestead from the rest of his family and moved his family there.  They farmed the land and raised many vegetables and produce to sell.  They also had a dairy and at one time had 35 cows which were all milked by hand.  For years a cream separator was used to separate cream so better as well as milk could be sold.  Corn cribs and a blacksmith shop were two buildings built of hewn-out longs and were used in the early 1940s.  A ram pump was used in those days.  The soil was very rocky and very good for berries and many crops and all used for making a living for the family.  The sons and daughters all learned the hard labors of the farm life.

Through time the road through the valley has been known as the Standifer Gap Road--named after this homestead.  In recent years a community club used the Standifer name.  Also, a Baptist church in the community still uses the family name.   However, the family has served many years in the Silverdale Baptist Church where Lillie is presently one of the oldest members.

In observing the life span of this family, it is a fact most of the family have lived many years--Thomas R., 87 years; wife, Viola, 81 years; several sons and daughters in their 80s.  One child, a premature baby, only lived 2 hours.  The other daughters who remained at home were Mary, 57, and Zilpha, 59.  At this writing in 1977, two are living: Lillie, 85, lives in the homeplace and Stellah, 83, lives with son, Elbert Schrader, in Cleveland.

One of the most remembered events of this family were the homecomings or family gatherings.  In later years, due to efforts by the older daughter, Sidney, we all gathered and visited with one another.  Sidney worked for 37 years as a home demonstration agent (21 years in Mississippi) and on her visits home we reunited.

Another remembrance is the daily evening devotions.  About 5:00 p.m. each day Thomas R. and Viola, as long as both lived, met in the living room and had devotions.  Sometimes singing, always prayer and Bible study.  After Viola's death, Thomas R. kept on the same schedule, calling the family together.

There were also the sad occasions.  When death came to the family, many were brought home until the funeral and on some occasions the funeral service was conducted at the home--this was the case for Thomas R.  The body then carried up the hill to the family cemetery.  In the cemetery are parents Leroy and Mary Standifer and eight of their children; and Thomas R. Viola Standifer and five of their children buried there.
