James Vickers' Will of 1840

State of Illinois, Hamilton county}

In the name of god, Amen. I James Vickers, of the county and state, aforesaid, being of sound mind and calling to mind, that it appointed to all men once to die, do make and ordain, this, my last will and testament. I reccommend my soul to God who gave it and my body to the Earth, to be buried in a decent and Christian manner, not doubting but at the general resurection I will recieve the same again by the almighty power of God, and as touching such worldy estate as it has pleased God to bless me with in this life- I dispose of in the following manner and form (that is to say) 1ST, It is my will and desire that all my just debts be paid. 2nd, I give and bequeath to my wife Elizabeth Vickers, Two mares, one a roan and the other a sorrell, also the farming tools. All the household kitchen furniture. Two cows & calves. The stock of hogs, also one hundred dollars in cash. 3Rd, I give and bequeath to my daughter Rachel Mahalia Vickers, one yearling mare colt: that is, It is one year old this spring, One feather bed & furniture. Also one calf, that is now sucking. 4TH, I give and bequeath to my Grand daughter, Elizabeth Jemima Allen, one feather bed and furniture and one cow. Out of my estate when all my just debts are collected, by my executor hereinafter to be named. Also it is my will and desire and i do hereby make, constitute, and ordain my wife, Elizabeth Vickers, executor, to this my last will and testement, and I do hereby utterly diallow, revoke, and disannull all and every former will & testement and executors heretofore by me made. Ratifying this and no other to be my last will and testement. In witness whereof I hereto set my hand and seal this 23rd day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty.
