Last Will and Testament of Charles Stanford
IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN. I, Charles Standford of Dorchester County in the Province of Maryland being sick and weak of body but of perfect mind and memory, praised be God for the same, do make and ordain this my last will and testament revoking and dis-annulling all other wills by me heretofore made and do confirm this my last will and testament.
IMPRIMIS. I give and bequeath my soul into the hands of Almighty God hoping by the merrits of Jesus Christ to obtain everlasting remission for all the errors of my life past; my body I give to the earth to be buried in a decent manner by my executors hereafter named and as for my estate I give and devise in manner and form following.
Item. I give and bequeath my son Thomas Standford all that part of three tracts of land lying on Hauedy Branch that issues out of the east side of Blackwater River to be divided by a small branch called the Beurk Branch that issues out of the said Hauedy Branch a little below the orchard that William Hauedy rented last year, together with all bonds, deeds, and writings whatsoever there unto relating to him the said Thomas Standford his heirs and assigns forever, but if the said Thomas Standford should die without issue of his body lawfully begotten then the aforesaid lands and writings given and bequeathed as aforesaid to go to my son Levine Standford his heirs and assigns forever.
Item. I give and bequeath all the remained of my three tracts of land lying on Hauedy Creek being the lower part of the said three tracts of land whereon Thomas Braddis now lives to be divided by a south course as far as the land extends to him the said Levin Standford his heirs and assigns forever together with all bonds, deeds, and writing (sic) what forever thereunto relating but if the said Levin should die without then his part of the aforesaid land be given to aforesaid with all writings hereunto relating to go and descend to my son Thomas Standford his heirs and assigns forever.
Item. My will and desire is that my wife Rosanna Standford have hold and enjoy that part of my land heretofore given to my son Levin Standford lying in Hauedy Branch until the said Levin Standford arrives at the age of twenty one years and if my said son Levin should die before he arrives to the age of twenty one years that then my said wife to hold the said land for the said term of years as if my said son had lived.
Item. I give and bequeath to my daughter Betty Standford the lowermost part of a tract of land lying on Fowling Creek called (sic) End of Controoentry beginning at the first (sic) bourded tree of the said land and running up Fowling Creek or Branch the course of the said land one hundred and sixty paces then to run with straight course along the said land so that the lower part to belong to the said Betty Standford her heirs and assigns forever but if the said Betty Standford should died without issue of her body lawfully begotten then the land given to my daughter Betty as aforesaid to go and descent to my daughter Sarah Standford her heirs and assigns forever, but if the said Sarah Standford should die without issue of her body lawfully begotten then the said land given to my daughter Betty Standford her heirs and assigns forever.
Item. I give to my son Thomas Standford his heirs and assigns a negro boy named Sol.
Item. I give to my daughter Betty Standford a negro boy named Jack to her and her assigns.
Item. I give to my son Levin Standford a negro girl called Hannah to him the said Levin and assigns.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah Standford a negro girl called Beck to her and her assigns.
Item. I give and bequeath to my son Charles Standford one shilling sterling in full of his portion out of my estate.
Item. I give and bequeath to my two grandchildren called John Lyden and Mary Lyden one shilling sterling apiece in full of their portions out of my estate or their mother's claim out of my estate.
Item. My will and desire is that all remainder of my estate after my just debts are paid and satisfied be equally divided between my wife Rosanna and my son Thomas Standford, Levin Standford, Betty Standford, and Sarah Standford to them their heirs and assigns forever.
Lastly. I nominate constitute and appoint my loving wife Rosanna Standford and my son Thomas Standford executrix and executor of this my last will and testament.
Item. I nominate constitute and appoint my fried Colonel Joseph Smals trustee to see this my last will and testament duly and faithfully executed. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and place my seal this 15th day of December ano Domini 1745.
