Generation No. 1
1. John1 Staniford was born 1648 (Source: Vital Records of Ipswich Massachusetts to The End of The Year 1849 (1910)- calculating back from death), and died May 25, 1730 in Ipswich, Essex, MA (Source: Vital Records of Ipswich Massachusetts to The End of The Year 1849 (1910)). He married Margaret Harris, daughter of Thomas Harris and Martha Lake.
Notes for John Staniford:
"John Staniford, ancestor of the Ipswich Stanifords, was born 1648. He bears the title of Mr. in his young life, and Deacon in his old age. He was a man of intellectual qualities and much occupied with duties which require legal knowledge. Several early wills are in his hand writing; and three are sealed with his seal, viz. Obadiah Wood, 1694, William Caldwell, 1694, Madame Rebekah Symonds, 1695. A picture of the seal Mr. A.W. Dowe has made for this paper, from a drawing by Mr. Hammatt.
John Staniford married Margaret Harris, and had at least nine children:
1. Thomas, born 1680, died 1740, married
Hannah Rindge.
2. John, who was a Deacon, died March 4,
1752
3. William, born April 6, 1684. He died
before his father, leaving a son Benjamin.
4. Ebenezer, born 1686, died young.
5. Samuel, born Aug. 27, 1688, married widow
Mary Chadwell, Aug 13, 1715.
6. Elizabeth, married William Martin, 7
month 1713.
7. Jeremiah, born Sept. 6, 1693, the
ancestor of Mrs. Kendall.
8. Margaret, born Nov. 29, 1695, married
Robert Calef, Nov. 3, 1723, and was the mother of Dr. Joseph Calef, the tory.
9. Tryphena, born March 21, 1698, married
Philip Lord, 1720.
Deacon John Staniford died in 1730. His old gravestone can yet be seen:
"Here Lyes Buried
Ye Body of Deacon
JOHN STANIFORD
Aged 82 years
Decd May ye 27 1730"
The death of his wife is thus recorded: "Margaret, Relict wido of Dea'n John Staniford, Died May 18t 1750, Et 93." She was the daughter of Thomas and Martha (Lake) Harris, and was born August 6, 1657. She was named for her grandmother, Margaret Lake, who died in Ipswich, 1672. Margaret Lake was the wife of John Lake and daughter of Edmund Read, and sister of Elizabeth Read who married John Winthrop Jr. (founder of Ipswich,) and sister also of Martha Read who married (1) Daniel Epps, and (2) Dep. Gov. Symonds. Margaret Lake had three children: John, Hannah and Martha; Hannah married Capt. John Gallup, killed at Marragansett Dec. 19, 1675; Martha married Thomas Harris and lived in Ipswich. The will of Margaret Lake is veru quaint. She gave her grandaughter Margaret Staniford, a carved box, a damask table cloth, and six damask napkins.
"The Stanifords and Harrises were also remembered in the will of Madame Rebekah Symonds, the last wife of Dep. Gov. Symonds; she calls them cousins, probably because a former wife of Mr. Symonds was their aunt. "I Give unto my Cousine Martha Harris, a good new Scarfe of Equall vallue with my best scarfe." "I Give unto my Cousine John Staniford on of my Gould rings and Three pounds in mony."
"Thomas Staniford 2, son of John 1 and Margaret (Harris,) married Hannah, daughter of Capt. Daniel and Hannah (Perkins) Rindge, gr. dau. Daniel and Mary (Kinsman) Rindge. Her father's town house was on Turkey Shore, and his farm was at the Hamlet. adjoining the farm known to people of to-day as Dane's.

"Thomas 3, son Thomas 2, married Sarah Burnham, November 11, 1732.
"Daniel 3, son Thomas 2, was born in 1717, and was graduated at H.C. 1738. He married Mary Burnham, and had one son and seven daughters. He was for six years, 1740-6, the Grammar School master.
"Widow Mary (Burnham) Staniford was graceful lady. She became the second wife of the Rev Nathaniel Rogers. There is a tradition that the seven daughters accompanied their mother to the Rogers manse, and the house was the centre of wit, beauty and brilliancy. Six of the daughters married:
Mary married Rev. Joseph Dana, D.D.
Hannah m. Thomas Dodge, Esq.
Margaret m Dr. Josiah Smith.
Sarah m. Hon. John Heard.
Abigail m. Dr. Joshua Fisher.
"Martha died unmarried at the residence of her brother-in-law, the Hon. John Heard. We have been told that there is a Stuart portrait of her."

Excerpt From a newspaper (Salem News?) story dated June 8, 1923
"BURNHAM HOUSE AT IPSWICH IS UNUSUALLY GOOD EXAMPLE OF THE 17TH CENTURY MODE OF BUILDING"
......"in 1775 it came into the possession of Philip Lord, who died March 23, 1816, at the age of 92 years. The house then passed to Sarah Lord Kimball, his daughter, then to her son Isaac Kimball in 1823, then to his son Philip Kimball in 1876, then to Ralph W. Burnham, the well known authority on antiques, in 1902, and to Mrs. Martha L. Murray, the present owner, in 1920."
[House is on Linebrook Road in Ipswich and is now know as the 1640 Hart House]
"From 'Ye Olde Burnham House,' Lieut. Thomas Hart had gone forth on the occasion of the Quebec expedition, and at a later date, four boys, sons of Philip Lord, to whom the old house was home, were fighting in the ranks of the Continentals at Bunker Hill. On the day of this battle, the father, deeply anxious as to the outcome of the battle, and the welfare of his sons, salddled his white horse and rode towards Salem to meet the courier from Boston. During his absense, Parson Frisbie of the First Parish Church, wishing to comfort the mother, called upon her and found her helping her 14 year old son to prepare to go to the battle. The parson remonstrated against allowing the youth to go, but with the true spirit of the women of that time Mrs. Lord replied, 'If I had five more, every son must go.'"
1640 Hart House History
THE 1640 HART HOUSE The sturdy and silent walls of the Hart House have been privy to the conversations of 350 years. It heard decisions the Hart family made in their respected role as one of the first families of Ipswich. It listened to the accusations of townspeople several years later who accused a member of the family a witch. It heard the tearful cries of the Lord family who sent five young sons off to fight the Revolutionary War. The windows of the Hart house have also shined in on the restoration of the house accommodating quests like Eleanor Roosevelt.
ARCHITECTURALLY FAMOUS The 1640 Hart House was built 20 years after the pilgrims landed in the town of Ipswich, founded in 1633. The house, originally one-room, was the home of the towns first selectman, Thomas Hart. A tanner, Hart built the house about a quarter-mile from the center of town. The house is one of the oldest in the country. In fact, some of the first steins of ale in the nation were served here in the late 1700s, or early 1800s. The home, with its five levels, five staircases and 350-year old fireplace remains one of the countrys prime examples of early American architecture with an English cottage influence. The current tavern, built in the 1800s, has hand-painted tea boxes from the Revolutionary era serving as some wall panels. The Hart houses original room, the Keepers room, was sold to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Hart room, build identically and directly above the Keepers room, was also dismantled and now sits in the Winterthur Museum in Delaware. Along with its architectural notoriety, the house has enjoyed an interesting and vibrant role in the history of Ipswich and the nation. In fact, several of the additions to the house are tied closely to its historical story.
IPSWICHS FIRST FAMILY Tom Hart was first listed in Ipswich town records in 1637 at the age of 28, having recently arrived from England with his parents, Isaac and Elizabeth, Hart married a local girl named Alice and they had two sons and two daughters. Keeping in tradition with families of that era, Hart built only one main room as his original home. In what is now called the Keepers room. The room was used as a parlor, kitchen and even bedroom on cold winter nights for the young family. The Keepers room is now one of the most popular dining rooms at the house. The second main room, in what is now the Living room, was probably built in 1725. As the Hart house grew, so did townspeoples respect for Thomas. He was chosen as the towns first selectman in 1659 and re-elected in 1661 and 1663. There was problems that plagued even the privileged Hart family, however. As Thomas Harts mother grew old, she was accused and sent to Boston for practicing witchcraft. She remained there for six months until Thomas presented a petition saying his mother had never shown any over signs of witchcraft. After a short trail, Elizabeth was allowed a return to Ipswich. Soon after she and her husband died. Thomas subsequently died in 1673 or 1674 with mystery surrounding his remains. There was - and still is - a tiny cellar a few feet below the Living room. It is in this dirt and slate cellar, some old-timers say, that Thomas Hart, who died in the winter, was buried. Legend has it that it was too cold for a burial outside so Mr. Hart remained in the cellar - with the intent to bury him when the ground thawed. No one seems to remember if he was ever dug up.
AFTER THE HART ERA The home remained in the Hart family until about 1755 when it was sold to a Philip Lord. The Lord family had the rare distinction of sending 5 sons - the youngest being 14 - to the battle of Bunker Hill. It is unknown how many came back alive. Lord died in 1816 and willed the house to his daughter Sarah Lord Kimball, who in turn willed it to her son Isaac. Although several additions were built during the Lord-Kimball familys possession, they were mostly for comfort and not built to withstand heavy weather. Some say it was in this time the house became a stopping ground for locals in search of some ale. It wasnt until the Hart House was sold to noted antique dealer Ralph W. Burnham in 1902 that the house made the official transition into an inn and tavern. Burnham restructured the house, making it resilient to the years and weather. He added a tea room and opened the inn to guests. However, as Burnham aged, he sold the home to Martha Lucy Murray in 1920. It is unsure why, but Murray bowed under 12 years of pressure from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to sell the original room of the house. In 1936, the room was dismantled and brought to New York. A replica was built at the home in Ipswich. No one seems to know how much Murray was paid for the room, but locals says she died a wealthy woman.
HART HOUSE POPULAR Ipswich enjoyed its greatest popularity in the heydays of the 1920s and 1930s, after prohibition ended. And in town the Hart House was the only place to go for a little glitter and class not usually found outside New York, Newport, Rhode Island and Boston. James Cagney, Eleanor Roosevelt and other well-known actors and Boston personalities used the Hart House as a summer retreat up through the 1940s according to records. Since then, the Hart House has continued to keep in pace with the area and times while still remaining its historical significance. Although falling into disrepair in the mid-1980s, current owners Patty and John Cormier have restored both the structure and spirit of the Hart House, making it one of the most unique dining experiences in the Boston area.
