Alexander Gibbs

(1846-1923)

Published Times: October 4, 1923

Alexander Gibbs was born in Hamilton County, Illinois, September 28, 1846; departed this life September 29, 1923, at the age of 77 years and 1 day.

He was married to Sarah Bauldin October 3, 1867, and to this union six children were born, Laura Dewitt, Nancy Redfearn, Fanny Gibbs, Ellen Gibbs, Rella Smith and Harry C. Gibbs.  All these have preceded him to the Great Beyond with the exception of Harry C. Gibbs of Macedonia, Ill.

His companion departed this life in August of 1888, and he was again united in marriage to Maggie Compton February 21, 1895, and to this union was born one child, Flossie Anderson.

He was born and lived all his life on the old homestead.  He professed a hope in Christ and united with Union Baptist Church, when a young man.  He remained a faithful member, having served the church as clerk for more than 30 years.  He was always regular in attendance until his health prevented him going during the past two years.  He took a great interest in the cause of Christ and rejoiced to see the church built up.

Uncle Alex, as he was commonly called by his friends was a well respected citizen, a good neighbor and his friends were numbered by his acquaintances.  Besides his own children he took into his home 16 years ago two grandchildren, Earl and Alma Redfearn, whom he cared for as he did his own.  He leaves to mourn his departure his companion, who has cared for him very tenderly during his recent illness, two children, thirteen grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren, but we weep not as those that have no hope, feeling hat our loss is his eternal gain.

Funeral services were conducted at Union Church at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 1923, by Elder Bird Green, assisted by Elder J. H. Allen.  Interment in the cemetery near by.
