Dr.
E. G. Neel, physician and surgeon, was born in Butler County, Ky., May
24,1838, the son of Wade and Lucy (Wand) Neel. The father, of German
descent, was born in Butler County, Ky., March 5, 1805, where he married,
lived, and died in 1873. He was sheriff of Butler County for one term. The
mother, of English origin, was born in Bowling Green, Ky., in 1815, and
died in 1847. Their eight children are all living. Oar subject was
educated in the home schools, when sixteen left home, and for about four
years was in the grocery business. November 18, 1856, be married Mary E.
Dempsey, born in Fincastle, Va., in 1838. Their children are John, Vara
(wife of T. P. Stephenson), Wade, Mary (wife of James A. Ball), Bartlett R
and Hallie. After marriage he located in Greenville, Ky., and in 1864
began the study of medicine under Dr. Dempsey, with whom he remained five
years. In 187 2 he took a course at Louisville Hospital, and in 1877
graduated from the American Medical College of St. Louis. In 1869 he was
appointed deputy United States revenue collector, of the Second District
Kentucky, and afterward appointed United States gauger and inspector of
the same district, serving in both four years. He began practice at
Greenville, Ky., and in 18 73 settled at Henderson, but since 1880 he hag
had his present practice at Thackery. He has been here longer than any
other physician, Find is a leading member of his profession in the county.
He is a Republican, first voting for Lincoln. He is a member of the 1. 0.
0. F. at Greenville, and of Encampment, Mount Olivet, No. 55. He and his
wife have been members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, for twenty-five
and thirty years respectively. In 1877 he was made honorary member of the
Missouri State Medical Society.
